Author and journalist Christopher White will present excerpts from his book, “The Melting World: A Journey Across America’s Vanishing Glaciers,” at an upcoming seminar hosted by the the Crown of the Continent Research Learning Center at Glacier National Park.
The learning center is hosting the free brown-bag luncheon presentation regarding effects of climate change on alpine glaciers on Thursday, June 26 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the park’s community building in West Glacier.
White, a science writer specializing in narrative non-fiction, will recount his personal journey documenting the impact of America’s vanishing ice. He spent five years with United States Geological Survey (USGS) Research Ecologist Dan Fagre exploring the fate of alpine glaciers in the Rocky Mountains and around the world.
In 1976, Glacier National Park contained approximately 37 alpine glaciers. Today, only 25 remain large enough (at least 25 acres in area) to be considered functional glaciers. Forecasts suggest these last glaciers may vanish in a few decades, with impacts to park ecosystems.
