Coroner Identifies Walmart Employee Who Died After Fatal Fall

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident

Authorities have identified the 57-year-old Kalispell man who died after an accident at Walmart.

Larry Wurtz was working at the Walmart on Hutton Ranch Road when he fell from a ladder Aug. 17, according to Flathead County Sheriff and Coroner Chuck Curry. Wurtz was transported to Kalispell Regional Medical Center and died four days later as a result of a head injury.

The manner of death has been listed as accidental, Curry said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident. Conflicting witness statements have been reported about the accident and the area manager of OSHA said the fall involved a movable staircase in a storeroom and not a ladder.

Jeff Funke says OSHA is sorting out witness statements and the investigation may take four to six months. Funke said the investigation is also looking into the time it took an ambulance crew to respond to the store. OSHA regulations require a workplace to “ensure the ready availability of medical personnel” or have employees trained to render first aid.
