Stanton Lake

By Justin Franz

As the season changes, Stanton Lake in the Great Bear Wilderness is the perfect place to take in the fall colors. This 4-mile hike from U.S. Highway 2 near Essex can be made into a quick and easy afternoon adventure.

The trailhead is located about 15 miles east of West Glacier, near the Stanton Lake Lodge. The first mile includes a few steep sections, but nothing impossible and within two miles you’ll be cruising along the shores of Stanton Lake. At the far end of the lake is a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch and take in the scenery.

Plan Your Adventure: From West Glacier, drive east on U.S. Highway 2 for 15 miles. Just past the Stanton Lake Lodge is the trailhead. There is ample parking on both sides of the highway.
