NWS: Winter Storm System On its Way

Mountain locations will likely see a few inches of snow in Northwest Montana

By Beacon Staff

A strong cold front will bring snow to central Idaho and western Montana this Friday night through Saturday, the National Weather Service announced Tuesday.

The cold front will move into central Idaho and far northwestern Montana on Friday evening and move across the Continental Divide by Saturday evening.

The storm system remains very dynamic and forecasts could change quickly, NWS meteorologists said.

Rain will most likely turn to snow across western Montana and central Idaho, with a few inches of snow likely at Marias, Lookout and Lolo passes. Low elevation valleys such as the Bitterroot, Missoula, Flathead and Mission valleys may see light snow showers on Sunday, but only rain is expected before then, the NWS said.

Mountain locations will likely see a few inches of snow, but the impacts are expected to be minor compared to locations further south and east.

There is a potential for several inches of heavy wet snow Saturday in Butte, Anaconda and Georgetown Lake.

Several inches of new snow is possible at high elevations in the southern Bitterroot Mountains on Saturday, mainly affecting Lost Trail and Skalkaho passes.
