In celebration of its 70th anniversary, the Flathead Conservation District has partnered with Flathead Valley Community College’s Service Learning program to present an Earth Day screening of “Symphony of the Soil,” a film that explores the complexity and mystery of our planet’s soil, on April 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the college.

The film showing also will commemorate the United Nation’s declaration of 2015 as the International Year of Soils. Preceding the film, Sammy Soil, United States Department of Agriculture’s soil conservation mascot, will make an appearance from 6-6:30 p.m. and will distribute complimentary Sammy Soil coloring books, International Year of Soils calendars and I love soil stickers. Following the film, Jay Skovlin, Major Land Resource Area Soil Survey Leader with Natural Resources Conservation Service in Missoula, will deliver a short presentation on Western Montana’s soilscapes, including those found in Glacier National Park.

In addition, a local seed display will be on exhibit for viewing, and information on local farms and FVCC’s agriculture program will be available throughout the duration of the event.

Free and open to the public, the event will take place in the Arts & Technology Building large community room on the FVCC Kalispell campus. The event is sponsored by the Flathead Conservation District, FVCC, Natural Resources Conservation Service and National Park Service.
