Glacier Firefighters Removing Hazards Along Sun Road

Park officials say main goal is to reopen 18-mile stretch of road to St. Mary Campground

ST. MARY — Some crews battling a fire that has burned 6 square miles in Glacier National Park have been assigned to work along Going-to-the-Sun Road in an effort to make it safe to reopen an 18-mile stretch of the scenic highway.

The road has been closed from the St. Mary Campground to Logan Pass since the Reynolds Creek Fire began on July 21 about 4 miles west of the St. Mary Visitor Center.

The fire has remained 67 percent contained for several days and fire managers are confident in the constructed fire lines to move crews to work along the road to remove hazards and extinguish hot spots.

Fire spokesman Mike Cole says the main goal is to reopen the road.

Firefighting costs have reached $9.7 million.
