Due to increased fire activity within the Great Bear Wilderness area, the Flathead National Forest has increased the existing closure associated with the Thompson-Divide Complex.

The U.S. Forest Service announced the expanded closure Friday.

The closure includes all Flathead National Forest land south of US Highway 2 from Pinnacle to Marias Pass, including the entire Great Bear Wilderness south of Mount Grant to the Spotted Bear Ranger District Boundary and the entire Skyland- Challenge area adjacent to the Lewis and Clark National Forest. Devil Creek Campground and Zips Rental Cabin are included in the closure area.

The sections of Bob Marshall and Great Bear wildernesses in the ranger district were restricted Thursday as 19 wildfires burn in the area, forest managers said.

This expanded closure on the Hungry Horse Ranger District along with the Wilderness closures on the Spotted Bear Ranger District, closes nearly all of the Great Bear Wilderness, according to forest officials.
