Balancing Winter Safety, Use and Access

This kind of project is only possible through partnership and community support

By Glacier Conservancy

The glacier national park conservancy is starting a new partner initiative with the Flathead Avalanche Center to provide expanded winter wilderness education opportunities to Glacier National Park visitors. This project will equip backcountry rangers and volunteers with skis, backpacks, beacons, shovels and other snow safety equipment. The teams will distribute snowpack information, monitor winter use and formally and informally educate our young visitors on how to have a fun experience and live to tell the tale, through avalanche awareness and backcountry use education. Winter wilderness use in Glacier is on a steady increase as the interest and engagement in Nordic skiing and snowshoeing expands. This program will educate and inform backcountry users about how to make the best decisions while enjoying Glacier’s beautiful winter landscapes.

While federal support provides for day to day operations, this kind of project is only possible through partnership and community support. To learn more about how you can help, visit glacierconservancy.org.
