FVCC Seeking Applicants after Phelps Steps Down from Board

John Phelps is resigning from the FVCC governing body after eight years

Flathead Valley Community College is accepting applications to fill a vacant position on its board of trustees following a resignation.

John Phelps told the college “it was time to step down,” according to a letter of resignation submitted to the school. He said he valued his friendship with fellow board members and college staff. Phelps began serving on the board in 2007.

The FVCC Board of Trustees is the governing body of the college. The trustees are charged with the primary responsibilities of establishing college policies and selecting a president to administer the operations of the institution. The seven members are elected by the citizens of Flathead County and serve three-year terms on a rotating basis.

The college will accept applicant letters through Jan. 27 from individuals currently living within the boundaries of Bigfork, Columbia Falls or Whitefish high school districts. The successful applicant will serve on the board until May 2016, and may thereafter run for election to serve the remainder of the current term. Subsequent terms will be for a three-year period.

Letters may be addressed to the President’s Office, Flathead Valley Community College, 777 Grandview Drive, Kalispell, MT  59901.

Interested applicants will be asked to appear before the board of trustees for an interview. Interviews will be conducted at a special board meeting Feb. 1.

Interested parties may contact Monica Settles, clerk of the district, at 756-3801.

In September, the board appointed Jeremy Presta of Kalispell to fill the open position resulting from former chair Robert Nystuen’s appointment to the Montana Board of Regents.

Callie Langohr of Kalispell was elected to serve a three-year term beginning May 2015 for the Flathead/Glacier High School District.
