FBI Warns Montanans About Tax Scam

Scammers targeting Montana communities claiming they’re with the IRS, FBI

By Beacon Staff

Scammers are targeting residents along Montana’s Hi-Line and telling them that they owe money to the federal government, according to the FBI.

A press release from the FBI’s Salt Lake City Division stated that scammers are calling Montana residents and claiming to be representatives of the FBI and Internal Revenue Service, even going as far as covering their caller idea number with an actual number used by the FBI.

The caller typically advises the recipient that money is owed on taxes and demands payment. The caller threatens that if payment is not made, the FBI will have them arrested.

The FBI is telling residents that federal agencies would not reach out to them via email or phone and demand money. The FBI encourages anyone who has received one of these calls to report them to the agency’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
