A Fourth of July head-on collision on Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road resulted in seven injuries and a two-hour closure of the busy thoroughfare on the holiday.

According to park spokesperson Tim Rains, the crash occurred about four miles from Apgar, toward the Lake McDonald Lodge, on Monday afternoon.

Seven of the nine people involved in the crash were injured, Rains said; one person was flown by ALERT helicopter to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, and three ambulances responded. Two people refused treatment.

The crash caused a two-hour delay on Going-to-the-Sun on what was already a busy Fourth of July, Rains said.

“We have higher visitation than normal,” Rains said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, though Rains said investigators have likely ruled out any wildlife interactions.
