Passerby pulled driver and passenger from SUV after it caught fire

By Beacon Staff

A 17-year-old Bigfork girl was killed Sunday in a single-vehicle accident when the SUV she was riding in rolled multiple times and caught fire.

Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry identified the victim as Madison Brooke Duke.

Duke was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, which occurred July 3 at 4:50 p.m. near mile marker 117 on U.S. Highway 93, just north of Kalispell. The girl’s death raises the number of highway and road fatalities in Montana to 80.

According to the fatality report by Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Josh Nanna, the driver of a Chevy Blazer veered off of the right side of the highway and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to roll multiple times before landing on its wheels and catching fire.

Both occupants were removed from the SUV by a passerby and transported to Kalispell Regional Healthcare. The passenger was pronounced dead en route.

Neither alcohol nor drugs are thought to have played a role in the accident.
