BUTTE — A 26-year-old Butte man faces sentencing next month for his father’s November 2008 beating death.

Adam Hatfield was convicted in February of deliberate homicide in the death of Matt Hatfield. Prosecutors believed Matt Hatfield was beaten to death with a baseball bat in a cabin south of Butte and disposed of his body.

A research scientist found Matt Hatfield’s skull about 20 miles north of Butte in October 2010. DNA from the skull matched DNA from blood on the walls of the cabin and a baseball bat found outside the cabin.

Adam Hatfield, who was 18 at the time of his father’s death, has been jailed since he was charged in February 2014. His first trial in April 2015 ended in a mistrial.

The Montana Standard reports Adam Hatfield’s sentencing is set for Sept. 20.
