ROUNDUP — A 50-year-old Oklahoma man is hospitalized after a rifle accidentally discharged during a Montana hunting trip and a ricocheted cartridge hit him in the head.
Musselshell County Sheriff Michael Thomas says five Oklahoma residents were on a hunting trip in the Bull Mountains southeast of Roundup on Sunday when the accident happened. While getting out of a side-by-side all-terrain vehicle, a 30.06 rifle was negligently discharged. Thomas says the cartridge ricocheted off the metal frame of the ATV causing shrapnel to be lodged in the victim’s head.
Thomas says the man’s wife drove him to the hospital in Roundup and he was later transferred to Billings Clinic.
Deputies do not suspect foul play. The man’s name and hometown were not released.
