LANDUSKY — Firefighters are working to contain a wildfire burning in north-central Montana to limit its impact on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation and a nearby mine site.

The fire has burned 16 square miles (42 square kilometers) in the Little Rocky Mountains and was 45 percent contained Sunday.

The July Fire, which started July 3, is within about a half mile of the reservation. It’s also near two small communities, Landusky and Zortman.

Fire managers say no homes have been lost but five outbuildings have been damaged. They say fire mitigation work done by residents before fire season helped make it safer for firefighters to protect buildings and suppress the fire.

Residents of Landusky had been under a voluntary evacuation order but that was lifted Saturday.
