Montana Sheriff Withdraws from Plea Deal for Assault Charge

Pondera County Sheriff Carl Suta was scheduled to enter a no contest plea Friday after prosecutors had charged him for kicking his son

GREAT FALLS — A Montana sheriff has decided against entering a no-contest plea to assaulting his son after he had reached a plea agreement that recommended he not be allowed to carry a firearm for a year.

The Great Falls Tribune reports Pondera County Sheriff Carl Suta was scheduled to enter the plea Friday after state prosecutors had charged him for kicking his son earlier this year.

The agreement previously reached with prosecutors required the sheriff to complete 40 hours of counseling and restricted contact with his son.

The sheriff’s decision last week came after a judge halted efforts that aimed to remove Suta from office. The judge decided a recall petition was insufficient to go on the ballot.
