Hinkle, Povich Win Beacon Pro-Scratch in Dramatic Fashion

Maury Povich sinks long putt on final hole to secure title at two-day tournament

By Andy Viano

Maury Povich drained a 72-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole at Kalispell’s Northern Pines Golf Club to give he and teammate Lon Hinkle a one-stroke victory in the 11th annual Flathead Beacon Pro-Scratch Invitational on July 24.

Povich and Hinkle finished with a two-day total of 131, carding a 66 on Tuesday after opening the tournament with a 65 at Bigfork’s Eagle Bend Golf Club one day earlier. The pair edged out Larry Barber and Tyler Erickson (66-66—132). Ryan Malby and Chuck Eble (66-67—133) were third.

Hinkle is a former PGA professional who posted a pair of top-six finishes at the U.S. Open in the early 1980s. Povich is the owner of the Beacon. Barber and Erickson won the tournament in 2017.

The two-day tournament brings together some of the top professional and amateur golfers from throughout Montana to compete. The better-ball tournament attracted 34 teams of pros and amateurs who played for $15,000 in prize money.
