HAMILTON — Officials in western Montana are investigating after a woman drowned in a Bitterroot Valley lake.

Ravalli County Sheriff Steve Holton says the 28-year-old woman from Florence was swimming in Lake Como on Thursday afternoon when she slipped under the water and didn’t re-surface.

Witnesses called for help at about 5 p.m. and tried to find the woman.

Ravalli County search and rescue personnel found the woman’s body about 80 feet (24 meters) from shore in water 12 to 15 feet (3.6 to 4.8 meters) deep.

Holton says the circumstances of the woman’s drowning are being investigated. Her name is being withheld until family members can be notified.

Lake Como is in the Bitterroot National Forest northwest of Darby.
