Monday: Evergreen Shooting, River Safety, Hardin Jail Fame

By Beacon Staff

Good morning; on the Beacon today, Friday’s verdict acquitting three W.R. Grace executives makes it clear the entire trial was a struggle for the prosecution. The Evergreen woman shot and killed over the weekend has been identified as 42-year-old Michelle Miller of Kalispell. The Glacier Raft Company in West Glacier has launched a new series of river education courses that appeal to boaters of all different experience levels. McGowen Precision Barrels, which manufactures gun barrels, is moving into a much bigger facility and drastically expanding its operations. Flathead High junior Casey Brown has been accepted into an elite theater program at the University of Southern California. And Kitchen Guy Jim Gray emphasizes to the corn lobby that he does, in fact, love corn, as well as honey.

Gov. Brian Schweitzer signed into a law a bill revising state law on gravel pits. And though the Legislature is over, lawmakers will assemble roughly a dozen interim committees to study issues until the next session. Sen. Jon Tester is planning a May 26 meeting to discuss resuming rail service across southern Montana. And since offering to house the Guantanamo Bay detainees, the Hardin detention facility is attracting attention from around the globe.
