Crow Tribe Elects Vice Chairman

By Beacon Staff

BILLINGS – Unofficial results show Calvin “Coolidge” Jefferson, Jr., has been elected vice chairman of the Crow Tribe.

In voting Saturday, Jefferson outpolled Darrin Old Coyote by 1,722 votes to 1,409, according to unofficial results provided by the Crow Tribe’s executive branch.

Jefferson, who lives east of Hardin, has worked for Indian Health Service in Crow Agency for 23 years and ran for chairman of the tribe last fall, finishing second to Carl Venne.

Jefferson has said his top priorities would be health care, especially for the elderly, and dealing with a housing shortage on the reservation.

Election judges were to certify the votes Monday.

Jefferson and Old Coyote sought to succeed Cedrick Black Eagle as vice chairman. Black Eagle was elected chairman after Venne’s death in February.
