HELENA – Gov. Brian Schweitzer is planning to make an announcement Thursday regarding Stillwater Mine.
The mine has been the focus of controversy after General Motors canceled its contract with America’s only platinum and palladium mine amid its ongoing bankruptcy case.
Political leaders have pressured GM, criticizing the company for what they call a shortsighted and hypocritical decision that will cost the country jobs. GM has so far stood by the cost-cutting move to buy the precious metal from overseas.
The governor’s office says Schweitzer will make an important announcement on the issue Thursday morning.
Columbus-based Stillwater employs more than 1,300 people, about 90 miles southwest of Billings in the Beartooth Mountains.
