More Montana Property Owners Seek Appraisal Review

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – The number of Montana property owners seeking reviews of their property appraisals so far this year is three times more than when the last reappraisal took place in 2003.

Montana Revenue Department numbers show 26,250 owners of residential, small business, agricultural and forest land property had sought informal reviews through Oct. 9.

About 8,400 parcel owners sought informal reviews in 2003.

An informal review consists of a department appraiser visiting the property and adjusting the value if warranted. People who remain unsatisfied can file a formal appeal with their county tax appeal board.

Revenue Director Dan Bucks attributes the increase to the department’s public education efforts and to this year’s greater average increase in appraised property values.
