Cold Snap Results in High Energy Use

BUTTE – NorthWestern Energy says the current cold snap drove up demand for natural gas to record highs.

The company says its transmission system delivered a modern record of 299,290 dekatherms on Tuesday, as below-zero temperatures gripped the state.

The company’s electric transmission system recorded a peak load of 1,766 megawatts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, which is short of the 2008’s peak of 1,805 megawatts.

NorthWestern Energy officials remind customers that the extremely cold weather will lead to higher energy bills, but the company stresses that people’s safety is more important than the amount of the bill.

Vice president for customer care Bobbi Schroeppel says NorthWestern will help customers develop payment plans if they’re concerned about being able to pay their bill.
