Weekend: Saving Sturgeon, Dem v. Dem, ACORN

By Beacon Staff

Good morning; on the Beacon today, A 30-year-old man, Jeremy Walbridge, suspected of counterfeiting bills and circulating them in the Kalispell area has been arrested after an Evergreen pharmacy was robbed at knifepoint. Kalispell officials are attempting to mitigate the effect the city’s transportation impact fee policy would have on a small downtown business attempting to relocate, but currently can’t because the fees it may be charged are too high. A bartender, Nathan Hale, who served a drunken driver who was responsible for a head-on crash near Somers that killed a Montana Highway Patrol trooper has pleaded not guilty to several misdemeanors. As efforts falter to save North America’s largest freshwater fish — the white sturgeon, a toothless beast left over from the days of dinosaurs — officials hope to stave off extinction by sending more water hurtling down a river so the fish can spawn in the wild.

The Obama administration said Thursday it has several concerns about Sen. Jon Tester’s plan to create more wilderness and mandate more logging in Montana’s national forests. With just days remaining to prove that they can meet a self-imposed Christmas deadline and pass President Barack Obama’s signature initiative through the Senate, Democrats seeking a rendezvous with history instead detoured to an intraparty brawl. Former Sen. Conrad Burns has been transferred out of the intensive care unit at a Washington, D.C. hospital as the Montana Republican continues to recover from a Dec. 9 stroke, his family said Thursday. Montana’s Human Rights Bureau says a 13-year-old autistic boy’s rights were violated when two teacher’s aides allegedly placed his head under water after he dozed off in class. The Villanova Wildcats finally have their first shot at winning the school’s first Football Championship Subdivision title when they face Montana on Friday night in Chattanooga. Browning, Montana resident Elouise Cobell urged senators to quickly approve a $3.4 billion settlement over the government’s mismanagement of Indian trust funds. A national conservative group from Ohio has run radio ads here calling on Democratic Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester to vote to permanently block federal funds from going to a liberal activist group known as ACORN.
