Gov. Schweitzer Cuts Spending at State Hospital

HELENA – Gov. Brian Schweitzer says he is cutting $4.5 million in scheduled repairs at the Montana State Hospital.

Schweitzer announced the move Tuesday as part of an ongoing effort to cut back on state spending as the state budget situation continues to worsen.

The governor’s office says the building scheduled for repairs at the hospital campus has a number of flaws and is not worth repairing. The building does not house any patients or state offices.

The state hospital provides treatment for adults with serious mental illness.

Schweitzer has previously eliminated four jobs at the Department of Commerce, canceled money earmarked to help a company with environmental cleanup and decided to save a small amount by not printing a state government directory.

Recent analysis shows that a projected surplus off $300 million could only be $44 million by June 2011.
