Schweitzer Among Governors to Advise Obama on Energy

HELENA – Gov. Brian Schweitzer is among the governors scheduled to talk about energy policy with the Obama administration.

Schweitzer says about 10 governors will be offering ideas during Wednesday’s meeting in Washington, D.C. Schweitzer was traveling Tuesday.

The Montana Democrat says he intends to tell the president that the current construction of power transmission lines is too small.

He says lines built today are not large enough to serve the demand that will come in five to 10 years. The governor says that companies are unable to line up financing to build lines for future demand, so instead build for current demand.

Schweitzer says he will suggest the Department of Energy offer low interest loans to finance the extra capacity portion of such projects.
