Flathead Officials Say Parvo Spreading Fast in Local Puppies

By Beacon Staff

The Flathead County Animal Shelter manager says parvo, a deadly virus for puppies, is spreading unusually fast around the Flathead Valley this winter.

Trista Sapp says there’s usually not that many parvo infections in the winter. But last month, the animal shelter lost 10 puppies to the virus — a rare occurrence for January.

Dogs may be vaccinated for parvo, which attacks the intestines and the heart. Only about half the dogs that contract the virus survive.
