Stillwater Christian School plans to offer year-round online classes for middle and high school students.
“We see this as where education will move, if not in the whole, certainly in part,” said Stillwater Superintendent Dan Makowski. “We are anticipating that and getting in the game.”
The school’s online program gives students the option of earning a high school diploma on the Internet.
“A student could graduate with a full diploma and all of the options,” said director of admission Craig Hunnicutt.
In addition to algebra, English, biology and advanced placement classes, the online courses include religion classes.
The classes are available through Sevenstar Academy, an online Christian school. Hunnicutt said Stillwater Christian is now a Sevenstar franchise and may offer its classes to students throughout the state.
Students can take a full course load online, use Web classes to supplement their other high school courses or home schooling, or take some courses at school and others online.
Makowski said he expects the highest demand for a combination of online and traditional classes.
Students tend to receive more immediate assistance and attention in a regular classroom but can work at their own pace in an online class.
“I think we will see an acceleration of online learning pretty quickly in our secondary schools,” Makowski said. “It could be at some point that we have very few full-time day students.”
