Polls Open in Montana

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – Montanans are headed to the polls to choose candidates for Congress and a slew of legislative and judicial seats.

U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg is facing political newcomers Mark French and A.J. Otjen (AH’-chen) in Tuesday’s Republican primary.

The winner will face the nominee in the Democratic primary that features former state party chairman Dennis McDonald and Missoula attorney Tyler Gernant.

Candidates are competing for 25 state Senate seats and all 100 state House seats. Elections also are being held for state Supreme Court, six district court judgeships and two public service commission spots.

Secretary of State Linda McCulloch says the last time Montana held a primary election without a presidential or U.S. Senate race, turnout was just under 27 percent.
