Kalispell Girl Pleads Not Guilty in Traffic Deaths

By Beacon Staff

A Kalispell girl charged with two counts of deliberate homicide after police say she attempted suicide by driving her car into oncoming traffic has pleaded not guilty.

The girl, who is being tried as an adult, made the plea on Friday in Flathead County District Court.

Authorities say the girl’s car on March 19, 2009, crossed the center line of U.S. 93 north of Kalispell and slammed into another car, killing 35-year-old Erin Thompson of Columbia Falls and her 13-year-old son, Caden Vincent Odell. Thompson was four months pregnant.

Investigators believe the girl, 16 at the time, was trying to commit suicide after arguing with her boyfriend earlier in the day.

The trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 27.
