Kalispell City Council Keeps Options Open For Westside TIF

By Beacon Staff

After discussing the merits of possibly expanding the Westside Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District, the Kalispell City Council voted 7-1 on Tuesday to keep the city’s options open for future redevelopment with accrued tax funds.

The city planning staff recommended moving in this direction after an analysis of the area outside the current district determined blight or public infrastructure improvement needs are present.

The planning board will now hold meetings with property owners that could be impacted and develop an urban redevelopment plan to propose to the city council.

The Westside TIF, established in 1997 as a financial spur for encouraging growth through redevelopment, will sunset next March. At that point the expected $2 million that will have accrued would be paid out in portions to the city, county and school district.

During the planning process, potential projects such as infrastructure improvements or public and private investments will be investigated, City Manager Jane Howington said.
