Officers in Lookout Pass Shooting Identified

By Beacon Staff

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – The Kootenai County sheriff’s office has released the names of two officers involved in the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old Whitefish, Mont., man on Lookout Pass last week.

Officials said Wednesday that Shoshone County Deputy Adam Durflinger got into a struggle with Alexander L. Mandarino over a gun and that Idaho State Police Trooper Todd McDevitt shot Mandarino.

Investigators say Mandarino had parked his car at a turn-out area near the top of Lookout Pass on Interstate 90 on June 12. An Idaho Transportation Department crew asked the Shoshone County sheriff’s office to make sure he was OK because the car had been parked at the turnout for an extended period of time.

Investigators say as Durflinger approached Mandarino, he noticed Mandarino had a handgun and a scuffle ensued. McDevitt shot Mandarino.
