MISSOULA — The University of Montana will award an honorary doctorate to retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

University officials said Thursday a ceremony will be held Sept. 13 at the George and Jane Dennison Theatre.

O’Connor served on the Supreme Court from 1981 until 2006, and has since heard cases in the U.S. Courts of Appeals.

University President Royce Engstrom calls O’Connor a true friend of the UM School of Law.

She previously delivered an address at UM in 1997 and sat on a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel that head oral arguments at the university in 2011.
