BUTTE — Netflix plans to shut down its DVD distribution center in Butte as more of its customers move to online streaming of movies.
Netflix corporate communications director Joris Evers tells The Montana Standard the closure will mean the loss of two management jobs in Butte. The envelope-stuffing jobs are done by machines.
Evers wouldn’t say when the Butte distribution center would close. He also said a “handful” of distribution centers nationwide will shut down, but did not say where.
Evers says last year Netflix had 9.24 million DVD members and 23.9 million streaming members. By the end of June, the company had 7.5 million DVD subscribers and 29.8 million streaming members.
Netflix opened its distribution center in Butte in 2007. In October 2007, it had six employees.
