RELAXATION, CLARITY, HEALING - THE BENEFITS OF FLOTATION THERAPY
Flotation therapy is undertaken by floating in a warm salt water isolation float tank. The highly
relaxed state achieved during a flota- tion therapy session has been found to be a healing state for many conditions including stress, anxiety, depression, pain, muscle and joint swelling, fibromyalgia, insomnia, and jet lag. Flotation therapy has also been shown to help increase creativity, boost mental clarity, and aid in the treatment of addiction.
Flotation therapy takes advantage of the body’s innate natural inclination to relax when floating at a comfortable temperature. The temperature of the water allows for natural heat generation to escape the body without the need for muscle action. Floating in the supine position (on the back), allows the pos- tural muscles to relax. The water pressure on the immersed skin is lower than the blood pressure in the body allowing blood flow to continue to the skin capil- laries. This is in contrast to normal bed rest, where local contact pressure inhibits blood flow requiring regular adjustment of posture. When floating, there is no need to adjust posture, enabling a person to float immobile for many hours at a time.
Benefits
Flotation therapy has been found to be
a healing state for many conditions including stress, anxiety, depression, pain, muscle & joint swelling, fibromyalgia, insomnia, and jet lag. Floating has also been shown to help increase creativity, boost mental clarity, and aid in the treatment of addiction.
Effects
Floating allows the body to dilate the blood vessels, reducing blood pressure, and maximizing blood flow. Natural endorphines are released reducing pain. Lactic acid removal is accelerated. Flow in the lymphatic system
is increased. Brainwaves transition from beta and alpha to the lower theta, responsible for the lucid dream-like state prior to deep sleep and waking.
Salt
For centuries the pure mineral compound Magnesium Sufate (Epsom salt) has been
used for soaking. The benefits of Epsom salt are profound and wide-ranging. Absorbed through the skin, Epsom slat replenishes the body’s levels of magnesium, improves sleep and concentration, aids in muscle and nerve func- tion, regulates enzymes, reduces blood clots, and lowers blood pressure. Magnesium also flushes toxins and helps to relieve stress.
