Typical resolutions call for a change in diet or lifestyle, but how about a change in the way you think about additives? Suddenly you nd yourself looking a little closer at labels...and oh boy what do you nd: chemicals you can’t pronounce, a variety of llers and arti cial colors and sweeteners. Maybe you are already thinking about it but do not know where to start or how to eliminate things from the products we use daily. Maybe you haven’t even thought about your medication being a source of unwanted additives. This is the year for you and a compounding pharmacy can help you get through it!
What is COMPOUNDING?? It is the creation of a pharmaceutical dosage form to t the unique need of a patient. In historical terms, another word used in connection to compounding is Apothecary, the person or place who makes remedies. For example, YOU are trying to avoid all the extra llers that aren’t necessary in your daily medication would have OUR Apothecary compound your medication from scratch.
Fillers are indeed a necessary item to make products stick together, be a uniform size, be visually appealing, suspend the item into solution and to keep items from going bad, but not all llers are created equal. Our pharmacy staff asks you to identify the items you are trying to avoid and then makes the medication into a formulation that is tailored just for you. We use high quality pharmaceutical grade or organic bulk compounding ingredients for each of our compounds. Typical llers people try to avoid are lactose, gluten, arti cial colors, mineral oil, propylene glycol, gelatin for vegans and magnesium stearate. Perhaps you do not like the way something tastes or can’t swallow pills very easily. A compounding pharmacy can create just the right vehicle to ease the medication process.
Starting the conversation with your compounding pharmacist is the rst step. We take a detailed list of allergies, intolerances and avoidances in addition to the regular demographic items for our records. We talk to you about your goals for therapy, the route of administration you prefer and even discuss the rough cost of

the medication we would potentially make for you. Once we speak to you the next step is to contact the provider for approval or for any additions or changes to the treatment. A good working relationship with the local physicians is very important for our success. We have an open door policy for all physicians to tour our lab and discuss our operating procedures to ensure they are comfortable with our standards of practice and the quality of products we make. Just as you trust us with your care, the providers must trust we can be consistent and safe in our practices.
Avoidance of llers and additives doesn’t just end with medications. Look through the daily items you use: the lotion you apply, shampoo you use, food you ingest, perfumes and household sprays. Here are some ideas to think about. Try to pick products that are as close to nature as possible. One family started limiting ingredients on packaged food to no more than ve for a month trial. Try cleaning with vinegar and essential oils instead of bleach. For wonderful smells in your home or as perfume, try adding essential oils into your routine. With their wellness bene ts and purity, medicinal grade essential oils are a great addition to your routine in 2016.
Here is to a great 2016 with less additives and more awareness! Cleaner living was never easier with a good partner helping you along the way. Stop by Alpine Apothecary and ask for more ideas like these or for any questions.
