Glacier View Mountain
By JUSTIN FRANZ of the Beacon
Just because the snow is lying and
the temperatures have dropped doesn’t
mean you can’t enjoy the outdoors. At
6,097 feet, Glacier View Mountain isn’t
in Glacier National Park, but it does ofer
stunning views of the park from the west
side of the North Fork of the Flathead
River. Snowshoeing up the mountain is
a great winter activity, but don’t get dis-
couraged by the ive false summits you’ll
cross. Besides great views, you’ll also
take in plenty of wildlife. On a recent
trip a bald eagle and plenty of deer were
spotted from the trail.
The 3.8-mile trail begins on the
North Fork Road and is a steep climb
with multiple switchbacks, which means
it’s the perfect exercise to work of that
winter weight. For more information,
visit www.fs.usda.gov/lathead
HOW TO GET THERE: Drive north of
Columbia Falls for about 20 miles on the
North Fork Road (County Road No. 486).
The pullout is on the east side of the road,
just past the Camas Road intersection, and
the trailhead is on the west side.
