1. Man Convicted of Murdering
Girlfriend in 1989 Dies in Prison
A 58-year-old White sh man con- victed of murdering his girlfriend in 1989 died at the Montana State Prison on Jan. 31.
John E. Gambrel shot and killed Lori Anne Schwegel in 1989 and was later sentenced to 110 years in prison. Details surrounding Gambrel’s death were not immediately available.
Gambrel was drinking in downtown White sh on the night of Feb. 4, 1989 when, at about 11 p.m., he went to the apartment he shared with Schwegel and shot her six times with a ri e. Gambrel then returned back downtown and con- tinued drinking until the bars closed.
According to court documents, Gam- brel returned to the apartment at 2 a.m. and red two shots into his head; one that grazed his chin and another that went through his chin, mouth and nose before exiting his head between his eyes. Prose- cutors argued that this was an attempt to cover up the murder and one witness said that Gambrel had once bragged that he had learned how to shoot someone with- out killing them at mercenary school.
After shooting himself, Gambrel went to a neighbor’s apartment to summon help. Gambrel later testi ed that as he was entering his apartment, someone struck him on the head and knocked him unconscious. However, Gambrel su ered no injuries to the back of the head and his wounds were consistent with that of a self-in icted gunshot.
Gambrel led for parole in 2006 and 2014 but was denied on both occasions.

house on Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lakeside Town Center, 306 Stoner Loop to present project details and answer questions.
The Blacktail Road, Road #917, is located on the Island Unit of the Swan Lake Ranger District and Flathead County, and serves as the primary access to National Forest System lands in the Blacktail Mountain area from the com- munity of Lakeside and U.S. Highway 93. The road provides access to the Black- tail Mountain Ski Area, motorized and non-motorized trail systems, the Black- tail Mountain Nordic Cross-Country Ski Trail System, and other recreation such as huckleberry picking, hiking, and plea- sure driving.
The project aims to stabilize and restore about 10 miles of road starting where the Flathead County jurisdiction ends, about milepost 3.5, to the top of Blacktail Mountain. Proposed activities for the project include transferring juris- diction of about two miles of road from the U.S. Air Force to the U.S. Forest Ser- vice; reconstructing the road to accom- modate a two-lane road with an asphalt surface; minor road alignments for safety and resource protection; stabilizing the ll slopes on a lower road segment above Stoner Creek; improving road drainage; replacing stream culverts as needed; and using the existing Blacktail gravel pit at milepost 13 to generate material for road reconstruction.
Comments can be delivered to District Ranger, Rich Kehr at 200 Ranger Station Road, Bigfork, MT 59911; by fax (406)837- 7503; or by phone at (406)837-7500, or electronically to comments-northern- [email protected] with the project name in the subject line.
