INDIA REACHES MILESTONE
How quickly we forget images such as these and the devastation of the Polio virus on the United States and the whole world. Many of us have the scars on our shoulder that are reminders of why America was among the first and fortunate coun- tries to eliminate Polio.
Polio is a highly infectious dis- ease caused by a virus. It invades the nervous system and can cause irreversible paralysis in a matter of hours. Polio can strike at any age, but it mainly effects children un- der five years old. Polio is spread through person-to-person contact. When a child is infected with wild poliovirus, the virus enters the body through the mouth and multiplies in the intestine. It is then shed into the environment through the faeces where it can spread rapidly through a community, especially in situa- tions of poor hygiene and sanitation. Most people infected with the polio- virus have no signs of illness and are never aware they have been infected.
For this reason, The World Health Organization considers a sin- gle confirmed case of polio paralysis to be evidence of an epidemic - par- ticularly in countries where very few cases occur. WHO and with help from Rotary International, the rest of the world is getting closer all the time to Polio Eradication.
This week, India will cross the
milestone of 12 consecutive months without any case of polio being re- ported - the onset of paralysis of the last case was on January 13, 2011 in West Bengal. The Government of India has cautioned against any complacency for the next three years, and highlighted the need for greater vigilance to be able to detect and re- spond urgently to any poliovirus im- portations. National Immunization Days are planned for January 22 and February 19 of this year.
Remarkable progress has been achieved in the fight against Polio. Since 1988, the number of polio cases has been reduced from 350,000 to under 900 last year. But, as long as polio threatens even one child any- where in the world, children every- where remain at risk.
Rotarians and their partners know there is much work to be done if we are to see a world without Po- lio. Rotary is close to meeting their goal of raising $250 million to match the Bill Gates Foundation challenge for eradicating Polio. More than one million members of Rotary world- wide have contributed toward the success of polio eradication to date, demonstrating the extraordinary im- pact civil society can have on a global public health initiative.
You can help Rotary achieve a polio-free world.
