The legendary Polebridge Mercantile is the site of this year’s Root Beer Classic Dog Sled Race on March 7-8. The 15-mile trek takes dogs and mushers through the scenic North Fork of the Flathead River Valley and along the northern edge of Glacier National Park. The race was started in 1983 as the Glacier View Race but was renamed a few years later when the organizers’ dog Root Beer died.
There is a 15-mile course for more advanced sled dog teams and a 5-mile course for novice racers. There will be one heat on Saturday and Sunday. There will also be a skijoring competition. En- try fees are $15 for a 12-dog team, $10 for a six-dog team and $5 for a four-dog team.
