YOUNG PAINTERS TO SHOWCASE WORK AT KALISPELL EXHIBITION
Three young, local, award-win- ning painters will showcase their work at an exhibition March 11 from 6-9 p.m. in the ballroom above Sassafras in downtown Kalispell.
Following the evening of ne
art, the artists – Kenneth Yarus,
Nate Closson and Richie Car-
ter, all of Kalispell – will head to
Great Falls to feature their work
at the historic Western Art Week
show, joining a legacy of famous
western painters who have shown
their work there, including C.M. Russell, whose March 19 birthday coin- cides with the visual arts festival by design.
All three of the artists are drawn to the rich tradition of oil paint- ing, which they say is making a resurgence in the global art world. The artists say their camaraderie has helped drive their artistic pursuits.
“Painting is such a demanding eld of work which by nature is quite isolating,” Carter said.
The opening will feature live music, refreshments, the chance to win an original oil painting, and the opportunity to meet the artists.

[is], you have to do it again.”
After she performed her rst show
one year ago without any expectation of an encore, she continued to knock out almost almost 10 sold-out shows across Northwest Montana, in Helena and Boz- eman as well as her hometown Missoula. And after she performs at the O’Shaugh- nessy in White sh on March 12, Bangs will embark on a nine-month tour across the western United States, with husband Eric Ellingson, their daughter – still “the light of our world and my greatest joy” – and dog in tow.
While Bangs wants her story both to entertain and release women from stigma, her mission is multi-pronged. An activist and consultant with over a decade of experience in strategic plan- ning and in the nonpro t sector, Bangs has organizational skills in addition to her comedic chops. Before she even wrote out the script, Bangs says she sat down with Dr. Christine White, the phy- sician she credits with saving her life, to sketch out 10, 20, and 30-year plans “to change postpartum care in Montana.”
“Because we’re not educated, we don’t relate anxiety to postpartum, [so women] think, ‘I’m a bad mom or a bad person,’” Bangs said. “The lack of answers we currently have for these health issues and health complications, it’s out of whack. There’s a real opportu- nity to change that.”
As such, in each place she visits, Bangs aims to congregate local healthcare professionals. In the Flathead, Bangs
has partnered with Kalispell Regional Healthcare, North Valley Hospital, Community Birth Center, Fern Creek Midwives, and others to bring the show to the O’Shaughnessy Center.
“We felt it was an important message for the community to hear,” said Cath- erine Todd, senior director of business development and community relations at North Valley Hospital. “We know that along with the happy things in birth, sometimes there are sad things that hap- pen, and we want to be able to help our families with the education and resources to get through the rougher times.”
Bangs will return to the Flathead in May for a storytelling workshop with local moms, which is becoming a signa- ture event along with meet and greets, which Bangs organizes to foster new relationships between postpartum moms and healthcare providers.
“I think it’ll bring great awareness [to this issue] in an enjoyable atmosphere with great emotion,” said Tagen Vine, president of Kalispell Regional Health- care Foundation. “With heartfelt tears to uncontrollable laughter, it sounds like a greatshowandhopefullyitcommunicates a deeper message that this is something that our community needs to work on.”
The sole Flathead performance is at 7 p.m. on March 12 at the O’Shaugh- nessy Center. Tickets are $20 in advance and $24 at the door. Find them online at www.playingmonopolywithgod.com.
