Demand is high for foster homes in the Flathead and

around the state, while new programs are being devel-

oped to improve stability and consistency for children

exi Torgerson remembers the day nearly 14

years ago when a detective came to the door,

asking to speak with her mother. Lexi, then

4, was living in Kalispell with her mom, who wasn’t

around a lot.

After the detective’s visit, her mom took her to

the Flathead County Sherif’s Oice.

“She dropped me of, and she didn’t say goodbye,

she said, ‘Mom’s going to be back, and these people

are going to take care of you,’” Lexi said.

Life hadn’t been perfect at home, Lexi said. But

where she was heading – the foster care system –

wouldn’t prove much easier.
