3. Jury: Montana Lawmaker
Coordinated with Dark-money Groups
A jury found April 1 that a Mon- tana lawmaker coordinated with and received services from conservative cor- porate groups in violation of state cam- paign laws, a ruling that could lead to his removal from o ce and bolster the state’s defense of its low campaign con- tribution limits.
Rep. Art Wittich, R-Bozeman, took $19,599 worth of in-kind contributions that he didn’t disclose from organiza- tions a liated with the National Right to Work Committee during his 2010 pri- mary election campaign, the jury found. The contributions included campaign consulting, direct mail, voter data, oppo- sition research and website design.
Plus, Right to Work-a liated gun- rights, anti-abortion, anti-tax, resource development and anti-union groups blanketed voters in Wittich’s district with letters supporting him and attack- ing his primary election opponent, attor- neys for the state said.
Candidates cannot receive contri- butions from corporations and must fully report donations and spending under Montana law. The jury’s decision was 10-2. Eight votes were needed for a verdict.

Threatens Wolverines
The Obama administration brushed over the threat that climate change poses to the snow-loving wolverine when it denied protections for the elusive pred- ator also known as the “mountain devil,” a federal judge ruled April 4.

1. Lawsuit Challenges Approval of
Montanore Mine
Environmentalists are challenging U.S. Forest Service approval of a $500 million copper and silver mine in north- west Montana, citing concerns from state o cials that it could drain surrounding waterways and potentially harm a spe- cies of trout protected under federal law.
The lawsuit led April 1 in U.S. District Court in Missoula challenges the Monta- nore Mine south of Libby near the Idaho border. Sponsor Mines Management Inc. of Spokane, Washington, has been seek- ing a mining permit since 2004.
But three groups said in the lawsuit that the government’s authorization for Montanore ignored studies of the mine’s environmental e ects. Those govern- ment-sponsored studies concluded the mine potentially could drain ground- water supplies that feed into creeks and a river in the pristine area, an e ect that could linger for centuries.
Earthworks, the Clark Fork Coalition and Save Our Cabinets said the water depletions would cause severe damage to the habitat of federally-protected bull trout.
EAST GLACIER
2. NPS Approves Construction of
Employee Housing in Glacier Park
The National Park Service is moving forward with the development of new employee housing in Glacier National Park.
The agency is slated to fund a new one- story fourplex at the Swiftcurrent hous- ing area in Many Glacier.
When funding becomes available, the NPS will construct a second housing unit — a two-story eightplex — at Swiftcur- rent along with a one-story duplex at the NPS compound in East Glacier.
The housing will replace beds lost when 10 severely deteriorated trailers in the St. Mary District housing area were removed in recent years.
The agency accepted public comment on the proposal last winter after releasing
