Our country and our culture have been putting off a conversation, avoiding an elephant in the room. It is the conversation that frightens some, binds others together and is a relief to many. This conversation requires thought and com- passion. It is time for our country and our culture to talk about death, the universal experience, and what it means for us as in- dividuals, families, and communities.
“Being Mortal”, a non-fiction book by physician Atul Gawande, has spent 25 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and the accompanying documentary that aired on PBS has captured the atten- tion of the American public. It is a frank and tender look at healthcare and our aging population. Dr. Gawande challenges read-
ers to consider what changes might need to happen in our healthcare communities. He implores physicans to consider the cost at which they provide endless interventions to chronically and terminally ill patients. The New York Times writes, “In a society that values independence, what happens when that is no longer possible? We need to reckon with the reality of the body’s eventual decline, Gawande argues, think about what matters most to us, and adapt our society and medical profession to help people achieve that.”
April 16 is National Healthcare Deci- sions Day. It exists to inspire, educate, and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning. Various studies suggest that only about a quarter of all adults have engaged in ad- vance care planning, yet all adults should discuss and document their healthcare wishes in the event of a crisis. Accidents and acute illness can happen to anyone at any time, but far too few adults have done anything to plan ahead.
Frontier Hospice is helping our com- munity to begin these critical and difficult conversations, to talk about the elephant in the room. We will host an Open House to hold conversations, provide information, and help our community explore these im- portant topics.
Please join us at our office at 42 Bruyer Way (directly in front of Edgerton Elementary on Whitefish Stage Road) anytime from 4 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, April 16. Our experts will be on hand to help you gather information and resources on Advance Care Planning (Living Wills, POLST, Five Wishes). You can also dis- cover the joys of being a Hospice Volun- teer. You’ll hear personal stories from our volunteers and learn about volunteer op- portunities. (In fact, this is also Volunteer Appreciation Week! Come join our New Volunteer Orientation later this month!). The Open House is a good time to learn about Bereavement and Grief Support that is available to our patients, caregivers, their families, and our community. Our skilled staff will help you explore the benefits of hospice care, including the We Honor Vet- erans program. You will have an opportu- nity to view “Consider the Conversation”, an award-winning PBS film focused on conversations about end-of -life.
Together, we’ll face the elephant in the room.
