One of the great local traditions, the an- nual Pond Skim at Whitefish Mountain Re- sort is a colorful, lively event that bids fare- well to winter in memorable fashion.
Big Mountain’s signature event is in its 10th year, and this year’s competition on April 11 is bound to be exciting as always. Due to low snow conditions, organizers are moving the course to the Armory Terrain Park/Chair 3 area, where last weekend’s Dummy Derby similarly launched.
The event begins at 2:30 p.m. on the sec- ond to last day of the ski season. There’s a maximum of 60 skimmers allowed and ev- ery participant is required to wear a cos- tume. This event quickly gathers a crowd every year as spectators eagerly watch the latest batch of brave skiers and snowboard- ers dressed in creative attire try to skim across the makeshift pond.
This year’s cash purse is $1,250. There will be three rounds. The first round tests every rider’s ability to make it across the pond. Those who do advance to the second round, when the skimmers must go over a “small” jump before entering the pond. Those who once again succeed advance to the final round, when it comes down to who can skim the farthest.
