EXPLORE
Kootenai Falls Recreational Area

By JUSTIN FRANZ of the Beacon

 The largest free-lowing waterfall
in the Northwest, Kootenai Falls near

Troy is a sight to behold any time of year,
but especially when the river is roaring
in spring. Located along U.S. Highway
2, the Kootenai Falls are accessible by a
series of hiking trails that are made for
people of all abilities. The trail brings
visitors to a large wire-spring bridge

over the falls. There are also plenty of
places to park for a picnic or read about
the falls, which is a sacred location for
American Indians.
In less than a mile, the Kootenai Riv-
er drops nearly 90 feet, with the largest
point dropping 30 feet straight down.
When you irst see the rocky falls, it’s

clear why they picked the area to ilm the
1994 action-adventure movie “The River
Wild,” starring John C. Reilly, Kevin Ba-
con and Meryl Streep.

HOW TO GET THERE: From Libby, drive 11
miles west on U.S. Highway 2. The parking
lot is on the right.
