Glacier Products Star as Montana Wins Badlands Bowl
The Glacier Wolfpack continued their dominance as members from the state championship team starred in the Mon- tana All-Stars’ 40-25 victory over North Dakota in the 22nd annual Badlands Bowl on Saturday in Miles City.
Recent Glacier graduate Cain Boschee nabbed a record three interceptions. The Kalispell cornerback, who will compete at Dickinson State University in North Dakota next fall, was named the team’s defensive MVP. Fellow Glacier grad Andrew Harris, a defensive lineman, also retrieved an interception and returned it 13 yards for a touchdown in the sec- ond quarter. Logan Jones took a 65-yard pass from Brady McChesney and scored a touchdown in the third quarter. Jones added another TD in the fourth.
Grady Bennett, Glacier’s head coach, was at the helm of the Montana All-Stars. The team retrieved seven total intercep- tions and limited North Dakota to 15 points in the second half.
Search Continues for New Columbia Falls Basketball Coach
One of the most successful boys bas- ketball programs in Montana can’t find a coach.
In the six weeks since Cary Fin- berg stepped down as head coach of the Columbia Falls Wildcats, the high school has not received any applications for the vacant position.
Activities Director Troy Bowman said he is actively pursuing candidates and recently reposted the employment notice on the state’s Office of Public Instruction website, hoping to attract someone to fill the role as soon as possible.
“I’m trying to reach out to people as much as possible,” Bowman said.
Bowman said the biggest hurdle for prospective applicants is the lack of a teaching position in the Columbia Falls school district to go along with the coach- ing job. The district is offering a salary of $5,496.95 to be head coach.
“I completely understand that that’s just not enough for someone to make a living off and feed their family with. But I just don’t have a teaching job that goes in our district,” Bowman said.
Finberg, who owns his own business, announced his decision in early May to step down after 19 seasons. He resigned from his alma mater after one of the most successful tenures in state history, lead- ing the Wildcats to five Class A champi- onships and seven consecutive top-three finishes at the state tournament from 2009-2015. He left with a career record of 298-138 as the boys head coach. Fin- berg remains the head coach of the girls basketball team.
Christina Aragon Wins Gatorade Montana Track Award
Christina Aragon of Billings Senior High School was named the Gatorade Montana Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
The 5-foot-4 junior distance run- ner won three individual state champi- onships at the Class AA state meet this spring, leading the Broncs to the state title as a team. Aragon won the 400- meter dash with a time of 55.87 sec- onds, the 800-meter run in 2:11.01 and the 1600-meter run in 4:46.34, setting a new all-class state record. A two-time Academic All-State, she broke the tape in the mile-run at the Adidas Grand Prix, crossing the line in 4:37.91, which ranked as the nation’s No. 1 performance among prep competitors in 2015.
Last weekend Aragon won the 800 at Brooks PR, clocking 2:04 at Shoreline Stadium in Seattle.
Aragon has maintained a 4.0 GPA and ranks first in a graduating class of 404 students. A member of the National Honor Society and the concert band, she has participated in a service-mission trip to Peru and volunteered as a senior stu- dent advocate at her school.
“I have not seen a better track and field athlete in the state than Christina Ara- gon,” said Jerry Boschee, head coach at Glacier High.
“She is an unbelievable talent on the track and very gracious off of it. She does not hesitate to congratulate her compet- itors and cheer for others.”
Aragon will begin her senior year of high school this fall. Aragon is the fourth Gatorade Montana Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year to be chosen from Bill- ings Senior High School.
Butte’s Daum Wins Second Gatorade Montana Track Award
Dalton Daum of Butte High School was named the Gatorade Montana Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior sprinter won a pair of individual state championships this spring and led the Bulldogs to a ninth-place finish as a team at the Class AA state meet. Daum broke the tape in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.81 seconds as well as the 200, in 21.67.
The state’s returning Gatorade Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year, he accounted for 28 of his team’s 32 points at the state meet and became just the sec- ond athlete in Montana history to repeat as state champion in the sprints in con- secutive seasons.
Daum has signed a National Letter of Intent to play football on scholarship at the University of Montana this fall.
