Volunteers Needed for Nation’s Largest Equestrian Triathlon
The 14th annual Event at Rebecca Farm in Kalispell features competition with nearly 600 equestrians in dres- sage, cross-country, and show jumping July 23-26. Hundreds of volunteers are needed to run an event of this caliber and organizers seek new community mem- bers for this fun and rewarding experi- ence. Prior to The Event on July 22, the USEA Young and Future Event Horse Series will be featured and volunteers are needed for this as well.
During the four days of competition, thousands of spectators come to see some of the finest riders in the nation, as well as promising young competitors. Admission is free, with full concessions and trade fair all four days.
Volunteers get up-close to the action and no experience is necessary for most positions. Volunteers can work as scribes, jump judges, ring stewards, hospitality assistants, and much more.
Lunch and t-shirts are provided and volunteers can work as much or as little as time allows, from just a half-day shift to the entire event. To sign up as a volun- teer, visit www.rebeccafarm.org/Volun- teer or call (406) 253-1862.
Wildlife Lecture Series Opens with Conservation Director of Patagonia Park in Chile
Flathead Valley Community College and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks are teaming up to present a community lecture series on wildlife across a wide spectrum of habitats and species.
The series, titled “Wildlife & Humans Together in the 21st Century,” will fea- ture wildlife biologists and professors who will consider some of the most com- pelling and important wildlife species and their relationships with people. Pre- sentations will be featured on selected Thursday evenings beginning at 7 p.m. over the summer and fall in the FVCC Arts & Technology building.
The series will kick off on July 23 with internationally known scientist Dr. Cristián Saucedo, who is the Conserva- tion Director of Patagonia Park in Chile. Through a multi-media presentation, Dr. Saucedo will highlight some of most intriguing wildlife species on the planet, including the puma, guanaco — the lla- ma’s close cousin — as well as Andean condor and huemul deer, the rarest deer on earth.
Patagonia Park protects the highest levels of biodiversity found in Chile’s Aysen region. As the park’s endemic plants are restored, the repopulation of wildlife has followed closely behind.
The entire lecture series is free and open to the public. The presentations will
each be about an hour long with questions continuing for an additional 20 minutes. A complete schedule of presentations is available by contacting FWP (752-5501) or FVCC (756-3946), or by visiting www. fvcc.edu, or http://fwp.mt.gov/regions/ r1/.
Comments Encouraged on Inside North Fork Road
Glacier National Park is reviewing its management of the inside North Fork Road and encouraging public comment by Aug. 3. Public comments will help identify issues and alternatives to be considered and evaluated in the planning process, according to park officials.
The inside North Fork Road is located within the park. It is a seasonal gravel road approximately 40 miles in length. It begins near the south end of Lake McDonald continuing to Kintla Lake near the Canadian border. The road was constructed in 1901 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Currently, the road is open between the Fish Creek Campground and Camas Creek on the south end of the road, and between Polebridge and the Logging Creek Ranger Station on the north end of the road. Hikers and bikers may uti- lize the entirety of the inside North Fork Road. The middle section of the road is not open to motorized use due to road damage.
Since 2006, annual flooding has caused significant and recurring dam- age to the inside North Fork Road. The river is beginning to undercut this sec- tion of the road due to sloughing of the riverbank. Culvert additions and replace- ments along much of the road and new road base are needed in several locations, according to park officials.
The park has brought in materials to mend damaged areas over the past sev- eral years. These fixes have been short- lived and resulted in deposition of road base and sediment into waterways, rais- ing concern for fisheries and the health of riparian communities, according to park officials.
The park’s general management plan calls for preservation of the area’s wild character, with provision of only rustic visitor facilities. The road provides access to four primitive auto campgrounds and several trailheads. These few develop- ments are surrounded by recommended wilderness.
A scoping brochure is available online, and comments and concerns regarding the project should be submitted online at www.parkplanning.nps.gov/Inside- NorthForkRoad. Comments and con- cernscanalsobemailedtoSuperinten- dent, Glacier National Park, Attn: inside North Fork Road, PO Box 128, West Gla- cier, MT 59936. Comments should be submitted by Aug. 3.
