EVANS REACHES VICTORY LANE AT MONTANA 200
Garrett Evans of East Wenatchee, Washington won last weekend’s 24th annual Montana 200 at Montana Race- way Park.
Evans, 60, earned his first victory at the state’s premier motorsports event.
BJ Tidrick of Kennewick, Washing- ton placed second and Kalispell’s Bodie Morton earned third in the finale on Sat- urday night.
With a crowd that filled the party decks and bleachers, the main event had 26 of the original 40 drivers left racing. A five-car pileup after only 10 laps took out early favorites Jonathon Gomez, the defending champ, and Jim Pettit II.
Owen Riddle, who qualified with the fast time, Alex Lessor, who had won two straight late model races at the track, and Morton, a local favorite, competed well but nobody could catch Evans.
Whitefish’s Giles Thornton placed 13th and Lessor finished 16th.

KALISPELL TO HOST LEGION DISTRICT TOURNAMENT
The legion baseball season is down to the final weeks, and teams will vie for the state tournament at the Western A District Tournament in Kalispell.
The Bitterroot Red Sox (15-5) enter as the top seed at this week’s tourney, followed by the Mission Valley Mariners (13-6), Bitterroot Bucs (13-7), Glacier Twins (10-9), Kootenai Valley Rangers (9-11), Missoula Mavs (8-12), Libby Log- gers (5-15) and host Kalispell Lakers (5- 15).
The Rangers take on the Twins in the tourney opener on Wednesday at 10 a.m. The Loggers play the Mariners at 1 p.m. The Mavs take on the Bucs at 4 p.m. and the Lakers play the Red Sox at 7 p.m.
All games will be played at the Lak- ers’ complex on Airport Road.
Libby won last year’s district tourna- ment.
The top teams advance to next week’s state tournament in Helena
The AA teams are still vying for trips to the state tournament, which starts July 28 in Lethbridge.
KIDSPORTS COMPLEX TO HOST CAL RIPKEN REGIONAL BASE- BALL TOURNAMENT
Teams from across the Pacific North- west are converging on Kalispell this week for the Cal Ripken 12U regional baseball tournament.
The prominent event at Kidsports Complex will begin with an opening cer- emony at 4:15 p.m., Wednesday at the Miracle Field. There will be a parade of teams followed by a speech by former NFL defensive end Doug Betters. After- ward, an exhibition game will take place at the field. Games will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. The championship will be played Saturday.
The tournament will feature all- star teams of players 12 and under from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alberta and Montana. Because British Columbia did not send a team this year, Montana was allowed to add the Whitefish all-star squad, which joins the Polson all-star team that won the state championship recently.
The tournament’s top teams will ad- vance to the Cal Ripken World Series in Florida.
LOCAL PLAYERS LEAD WEST TO SHRINE GAME WIN
A group of talented local players led the way at this year’s 68th annual Mon- tana East-West Shrine Game in Laurel.
The West’s all-star football team de- feated the East 34-10 on Saturday.
Jared Trinastich, a quarterback from Columbia Falls, completed 16 of 22 pass- es for 200 yards and two touchdowns to lead the West. The former standout Wildcat was awarded the Roger Silver- nale Memorial Award as the game’s most outstanding player. Trinastich signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Mon- tana Western next fall.
Glacier High graduate and Montana State recruit Noah James piled up 35 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Whitefish’s Sean Foley, a University of Montana recruit, had a 22-yard touch- down catch from Trinastich in the first quarter. Foley finished with 42 yards re- ceiving. Whitefish’s Calub Thilmony was named the defensive MVP for the West.
The Shrine game is Montana’s de facto all-star football game for recent graduates.
