The Whitefish School District Board of Trustees is accepting applications for the vacant seat following the death of Pat Jarvi.
Jarvi, a longtime board member and former school librarian, passed away June 3. She was 72.
Jarvi served 15 years on the school board and was chair from 2009 through May.
The board hopes to fill the vacancy in the coming weeks. Interviews will be held Aug. 3 and the top choice will be picked at the board’s meeting on Aug. 7.
Applicants must be registered voters of the Whitefish school district, be at least 18 years of age and must have resided in the district for at least 30 days. In addi- tion to the two regularly scheduled board meetings each month, trustees serve on various committees and study groups.
The trustee selected to fill the vacancy will serve by appointment until the next school election, which will occur in May 2016.
Applications are available on the dis- trict’s website, www.wsd44.org, or can be picked up at the district office, 600 East Second St.
Applications must be received by July 30.

2. Dozen People Sent to Hospital After Passenger Van Flips
Nearly a dozen people were sent to the hospital on June 22 after a passenger van flipped over while driving down Blacktail Mountain Road near Lakeside.
Of the 14 people who were inside the van, a “majority” of them were taken to the hospital as a precaution, said Mon- tana Highway Patrol Trooper Andrew Horton, although no one sustained any life-threatening injuries.
According to Horton, the accident was reported shortly before 4 p.m. Although details were limited, Horton said that it appeared the van, which had been

Horton said most people in the van were wearing seatbelts and that it is likely the driver will be cited.

3. Reserve Street Camp Killer Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison
A man charged with killing another man and throwing his body into the Clark Fork River in Missoula has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.
The Missoulian reports that 28-year- old Kevin Joseph Lino was sentenced July 22 in connection with the death of Gilbert “Jack” Berry. He had pleaded no contest to deliberate homicide in April.
Court documents allege that Lino and another man had beaten Berry at the Reserve Street transient camp in July 2014. Lino had allegedly tortured Berry, carving gang symbols into his body and shoving lit cigarettes in his nose.
Lino eventually shot Berry in the head and dumped his body into the Clark Fork River. His body was found August 5.
Lino will serve his 40-year term in the Montana State Prison.

4. Wild, Exotic Animals May Be Banned From Missoula Circus Acts
Missoula council members will vote in August on a measure banning wild and exotic animals from circus acts.
The Missoulian reports University of Montana law library director and animal law expert Stacey Gordon helped draft the measure based on laws already in place elsewhere. If passed, Gordon says the law would not touch the rodeo, and only cov- ers shows like circus elephant acts.
The measure doesn’t impact livestock or educational displays either.
Missoula’s public safety and health committee on last week referred the pro- posed ban to the city council for a public hearing and vote.
